CIE WEEK – NEW RULES AND ANOTHER WEEK DEDICATED TO RENEWING ELECTRONIC ID CARDS AHEAD OF THE PHASE-OUT OF PAPER ONES.

Starting from August 3, 2026, the paper version of the ID card will no longer be valid for traveling abroad, regardless of the expiration date shown on the back.

DL 26/06/2026 n.108 introduced some important changes:
– A paper ID card that hasn’t expired can still be used as an identification tool when dealing with the Italian Public Administration and entities providing public services, including Consulates;
– In urgent cases, Italian municipalities can issue a temporary ID that’s valid for traveling abroad, non-renewable, and valid for no more than 6 months. The document might not be accepted in some foreign countries, so check entry requirements on Viaggiare Sicuri.

Note: Starting from June 1st, it is possible for Italian citizens living abroad (AIRE) to request the CIE at any Italian Municipality, as specified by Law 19 January 2026, n.11. Remember to bring your Tax Code with you! Given the many requests received during the week dedicated to the renewal of electronic identity cards (CIE), the Italian Embassy has decided to bring back the “CIE Week” to help fellow citizens who have not yet been able to renew their document. Please note that starting from August 3, 2026, all paper identity cards (CIC) will no longer be valid, making it necessary for all Italian citizens residing in the consular district of Cyprus to get the new electronic identity card (CIE).

The Italian Embassy in Nicosia will dedicate the days from July 21 to 30 to renewing CIEs, adding extra appointments for interested Italian citizens. The booking process will be simplified for those concerned: exceptionally, as a deviation from using the Prenot@mi portal, it will be enough to send an email to consolare.nicosia@esteri.it specifying in the subject “CIE Renewal” followed by the applicant’s first and last name and including the requested date. We will make sure to reply to the email confirming the appointment and indicating its time.

Confirmation is required, and unconfirmed appointments will not be accepted. For the renewal, the user must appear with a valid identity document and a passport-sized photo. Please note that the cost of renewing the CIE is 22 euros, to be paid in cash at the consular counter.

To make things easier, please have a mobile phone number and an email address ready to link to your request.

Minors must be accompanied by both parents or by one parent with authorization from the absent parent, along with a copy of the absent parent’s ID. From the age of 12, minors must be present at the appointment to collect biometric data.
