Former Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides awarded the decoration of Commander of the Order Of Merit Of The Italian Republic

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Ioannis KASOULIDES, received the title of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (OMRI) by the Italian Ambassador to Cyprus, Andrea Cavallari, during a ceremony celebrated on the 18th September 2019 at the Ambassador’s Residence at the presence of numerous Italian and Cypriot guests.

It was significant, also in the context of bilateral relations, to note the participation of the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Christodoulides, the President of the ruling Party, DISY, Averof Neofitou, the Presidential Commissioner for children’s rights, Leda Koursoumba, and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis.

Dr. Kasoulides is a respected exponent of the Cypriot political scene, having held significant positions for over three decades, including Minister of Foreign Affairs for two mandates, member of the European Parliament and President of the DISY party. During his ministerial mandate and thanks to his active contribution, Cyprus joined the European Union and carried out a wide-ranging foreign policy centred on relations with Eastern Mediterranean countries and the EU.

Ambassador Cavallari recalled the motivations that led the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to confer this important recognition. He underlined how Minister Kasoulides shared with our country the need for a strong boost in European integration; and how, in his political activities, he repeatedly proved himself a loyal and sincere friend of Italy, building on the common identity of our two Countries, advocating for greater European solidarity, in particular, in recent times, in the field of migration flow management.

The decoration bestowed upon Minister Kasoulides underlines the importance of the relations that exist between Italy and Cyprus in all sectors, as well as the role that this partnership plays in the context of our common EU membership.
