Visit of the “Bruno Gregoretti” Ship of the Italian Coast Guard to Larnaca (Cyprus) as part of the EFCA mission – 20-23 November 2021

The Ship of the Italian Coast Guard, Bruno Gregoretti, docked in Larnaca for a Port visit to Cyprus from November 20th to 23rd.

The Port visit was carried out as part of a JDP (Joint Deployment Plan) mission, under the aegis of the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA), in the waters of the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

The mission is aimed at strengthening the cooperation between EU Member States in the fight against illegal fishing, which remains one of the greatest threats to marine ecosystems and tends to undermine national and regional efforts to guarantee marine biodiversity.

On 21st November, the Ambassador of Italy in Cyprus received on board by the Captain of Frigate (CP) Ivan Savarese of the International Affairs Office of the General Command of the Port Authority Corps – Coast Guard and by the Ship’s Commander, Lieutenant of Vascello (CP) Salvatore Malaponti, welcomed and greeted the guests who attended, including the Director of the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment, Mrs. Marina Argyrou, the Commander of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) of Larnaca, Mr. Andreas Charalambides, the Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of Defense, Mr. Andreas Eliades, and the Captain of Frigate of the Cypriot Navy, Mr. Minas Solomonides.

The guests on board were able to appreciate the institutional and operational activities of the Italian Port Authority Corps – Italian Coast Guard also through a visit to the naval unit.

The Ambassador greeted the Ship’s crew addressing words of gratitude and appreciation for the commitment of the Italian Coast Guard in the multitude of institutional activities carried out for the research and rescue at sea, the surveillance of maritime fishing and for the activities to combat pollution in order to protect the marine environment.

During the Port visit, the Captain of Frigate (CP) Ivan Savarese, accompanied by the ship’s Commander, Lieutenant of Vascello (CP) Salvatore Malaponti, and by part of the crew of Nave Gregoretti, visited the facilities of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) at the Zenon Center in Larnaca. As part of the mutual international cooperation activity, it was possible to exchange information on mutual operational capabilities and experiences, also in order to further strengthen cooperation between the two organizations in rescue activities at sea.

At the end of the Port visit to Larnaca, on November 23, Nave Gregoretti also participated in a joint search and rescue exercise (SAREX) organized by JRCC Larnaca in the waters off the island of Cyprus, carrying out a medical evacuation of an injured person on board the Naval Unit by means of an AW139 helicopter of the Cypriot police.

The arrival of the Gregoretti ship in Cyprus coincided with the start of the celebrations for the sixth edition of the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World which represented a further reason for organizing an event to promote Italian cuisine on board.
