Presentation of the documentary ‘Digging History’ – celebrating the 50th anniversary of archaeological relations between Cyprus and Italy

On the 29th of November 2021, the Embassy of Italy in Nicosia, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, celebrated the 50th anniversary of archaeological relations between Cyprus and Italy with the documentary ‘Digging History’, which took place in Kastelliotissa Hall, Nicosia, at the presence of the H.E. Yiannis Karousos, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works of the Republic of Cyprus.

The event, attended by a large number of invitees, representatives of the institutions researchers and member s of the diplomatic corps, was opened by the Ambassador of Italy in Cyprus, H.E. Andrea Cavallari, who presented the scope of the project - highlighting Italy’s longstanding tradition of supporting archaeological missions in Cyprus, while reaffirming the deep cultural ties between the two countries.

H.E. Yiannis Karousos, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works of the Republic of Cyprus, remarked the importance of bilateral cooperation between the two countries and highlighted weighty topics, such as the fruitful collaboration between the two countries to prevent looting and preserve cultural heritage.

The Director of Antiquities of Cyprus, Dr. Marina Solomidou-Ieronymidou, stressed Cyprus’ desire to continue collaborating with Italy and presented the work carried out by the Italian Missions in Cyprus since its inception in 1970 together with Cypriot local partners and institutions.

Final addresses were given by Prof. Luca Bombardieri from the University of Siena, and also one of the Directors of the five Italian archaeological Missions in Cyprus, and by Dr. Iosif Hadjikyriakos who directed the project started in April 2021.

The highlight of the evening was the screening of the documentary presentation, available on our YouTube channel, that will be followed in the next weeks by seven mini episodes, each featuring the work of the five Italian archaeological Missions in Cyprus and local partners. The videos will be available on our online channels starting from this week.
