Italian Between Word and Image: Graffiti, Illustrations, Comic Books

The Week of the Italian Language in the World will be held from October 19th to October 25th. This important initiative aims at celebrating Italian language and culture in Italy and abroad. This year’s focus will be on the theme: “Italian between word and image: graffiti, illustrations, comics”, expressive forms of art capable of enhancing the Italian language through images. The Embassy of Italy in Cyprus, in collaboration with local partners, promotes a series of initiatives dedicated to the culture and art of Italian animation.

From October 20th to October 27th, at MERES bookstore in Nicosia, we will present an exhibition of the artworks of young Italian cartoonists and illustrators who participated in the Lucca Project Contest 2020, a competition open to comic book authors, organised by Lucca Comics & Games in collaboration with Edizioni BD. Visitors will have the possibility to read and enjoy “Fumetti nei Musei” (“Comics in the Museums”), a series especially created for the occasion by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism. 51 stories that will accompany the reader on a journey through Italian museums. Publications from Bao Publishing, a well known and established publishing house specialised in comic books, will also be displayed. The initiative will be enriched by the screening of animated short films, made available by ASIFA Italy (Association Internationale du Film d’Animation, Italy).

Starting November 6th, 2020, an exhibition of original manuscripts and drawings from the book “Viaggiando il Mediterraneo, il Digenis Akritas e la tradizione orale e visiva del mio mare”, by Prof. Iosif Hadjikyriakos will be hosted by the Pierides Museum in Larnaca. Words and images in Greek and Italian describing the ancient myths that unite peoples and illustrate the cultures of the Mare Nostrum. The exhibition will remain open until March 31st, 2021.

On the occasion of the Week of the Italian language, the Embassy will make available on its social media documentaries about the art of comics, webinars with the participants of the Lucca Project Contest and virtual meetings with the authors of the series "Comics in the Museums”.

The Week of the Italian Language in the World is an initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Accademia della Crusca, the Ministry for Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism and the Ministry of Education, University and Research, under the high patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy.
