Joint statement by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus and Italy following today’s meeting between Ministers Nikos Christodoulides and Luigi Di Maio in Rome

Italian and Cypriot Foreign Ministries met on January 29th in Rome to discuss of their excellent bilateral relations, the Libyan crisis, the migrations, the recent evolutions on the East Mediterranean, and energy related issues.

Recalling the conclusions of the European Council in October and December 2019, Italy reaffirmed its solidarity to Cyprus over the continuing Turkey’s illegal drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, conducted in complete disregard of Cyprus’ sovereign rights.

The two Ministries of Foreign Affairs, welcoming the call made the last summer by the Government of Cyprus to negotiate with Turkey, [FAC July 20189], have agreed that the delimitation of the EEZ and the Continental Shelf should be discussed through dialogue and good-faith negotiations, with full respect of International Law and in accordance with the principles of good neighbourliness.
