The Embassy of Italy informs that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and the Cyprus Institute (CyI) was signed in Rome on October 24th, 2017, at CNR headquarters. The MoU covers the mutual scientific interests between the two parties, and is the result of a long-lasting scientific collaboration. CNR and CyI agreed on a common set of actions that will be the foundations for future scientific and technological collaborations between the two countries. The selected research areas of interest are: Climate Change and Adoption of Common Strategies in the Mediterranean, Energy, Agrifood and Biological Sciences, Humanities, Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, Sustainable Development and Water Management, Computational Sciences.

The MoU was signed by CNR’s President, Prof. Massimo Inguscio, and by CyI’s President, Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas.

“Cyprus is an important partner for Euro-Mediterranean science and technology cooperation in the fields of cultural heritage, sea economy, agriculture and food chains, plant phenotyping and nanotechnologies” said CNR’s President Massimo Inguscio. “Its strategic position, which makes it a bridge of particular importance for the development of a trilateral dialogue between the Western Mediterranean, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, has allowed progressive attention to its political, economic and scientific aspects. Scientific institutions like The Cyprus Institute have actively participated in multilateral projects funded by the EU Framework Programmes jointly with CNR, and Cyprus is also an important partner for Italy (CNR and the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research), and of the EU-funded PRIMA project, giving a fundamental contribution to its implementation and development in key areas such as the conservation of water resources and the agriculture and nutrition chain in the Mediterranean. On these topics, CNR institutes offer a high-level contribution in terms of scientific and technological innovation, especially in the fields of biological conservation and plant phenotyping”.

The ceremony, organized by CNR’s International Relation Office, was attended by: the Cypriot Ambassador to Rome, H.E. Tassos A. Tzionis; Edouard Brézin (Chair of the Cyprus Institute for Scientific Advisory and Council and former President of the French Academy of Sciences); Jean Sciare (Director of CyI Energy, Environment and Water Research Center – EEWRC); Francesco Loreto, Director of CNR Department on Bio-Agro-Food Sciences; Gilberto Corbellini, Director of CNR Department on Social and Human Sciences, Cultural Heritage; Gelsomina Pappalardo Researcher of CNR-IMAA of the ACTRIS/ESFRI (atmospheric observation) programme.
