The Ambassador of Italy to the Republic of Cyprus, H.E. Guido Cerboni, bestowed today upon Dr. Christodoulos Xinaris, a Cypriot Scientist who has been working in Italy for several years as a Senior Researcher at the “Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research” in Bergamo, near Milan, the distinction of "Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia” (Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy) in recognition of his outstanding contribution not only to the progress of scientific research in Italy, but also to Italian-Cypriot cooperation and friendship.Dr. Xinaris’ work at the Mario Negri Institute, one of the most important and prestigious Italian research centers, is aimed in particular at developing novel therapies for patients suffering from kidney failure and thus at improving people’s lives. He is Group Leader within the Laboratory of Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, within the Department of Molecular Medicine. Since 2012 he and his team have been able to construct “organoids” using stem cells.
In congratulating Dr. Xinaris for the distinction awarded to him by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, the Italian Ambassador underlined not only his remarkable scientific achievements, but also his high human qualities and sensibility. None of Dr. Xinaris’ discoveries are patented and he is something of a medical missionary, always ready to help, to cure disease, in a continuous effort to make a better world. The Cypriot Researcher is also an appreciated science manager: Dr. Xinaris is co-founder and Managing Director of BioRenovo Ltd, a regenerative medicine company based in Italy, the mission of which is to secure external funding for regenerativeā€medicine projects and provide breakthrough therapies to patients suffering from kidney failure. He is also Scientific Consultant at BELLCO Inc., a private company which operates worldwide offering therapies and systems for the treatment of renal failure and multiple organ failure.
The “Order of the Star of Italy” was founded in 1947 by the first President of the newly established Republic of Italy. It represents a high distinction for all those who have acquired special merits in their activities and in the promotion of friendly relations and cooperation between Italy and other Countries.
